Thank you for joining us last Tuesday to celebrate Rosa Parks’ Birthday with us. We look forward to celebrating with you again next year.
The day was wonderful! We gathered together to celebrate Rosa Parks’ birthday and our communities’ victory where starting in 2021, TriMet will have a fare free day in her honor. Our Transit Equity Coalition has fought to achieve this and we look forward to continuing to follow the legacy of Rosa Parks in the fight for transportation justice as a civil rights issue.
We enjoyed hearing from amazing, local Black leaders in our community on how they continue to also honor the legacy of Rosa Parks and how they are working on an individual and official capacity to carry us to a just public transit system. Collectively, we can achieve a just transition.
A just transition requires that we uphold worker and civil rights. This means that everyone should have the right and access to free or at least affordable public transportation regardless of age, race, or class. It also includes supporting the rights of workers to organize in the sectors that will build, operate and maintain public transportation infrastructure, as well as provide the services and have it be environmentally sustainable.
Transportation Justice is a Civil Rights issue! Let’s continue to come together to honor the legacy of the “First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement”. Join us next year by staying connected here.
