Since joining OPAL in 2016, Executive Director Huy Ong has overseen the growth and transformation of OPAL while continuing our legacy of grassroots organizing in impacted communities. Every year, we bring together community to meet and greet Huy and talk about the year ahead. 2017 was OPAL’s biggest year ever, with even more big wins on the horizon.
Huy Hour is an Organizing Resources event! We raise money with our community through this casual, annual celebration. We share food and drinks and a short spoken program. If you already know our work, we ask you to attend with a friend who you want to bring into the OPAL family. If you’re new to OPAL, this event will get your caught up, and show you exactly how you can join our movement. We ask community to make a commitment to OPAL in the year to come – to donate, volunteer, or help us build power through organizing with us.
This year, the event is a fundraiser for the OneOregon coalition, a broad alliance of stakeholders who are fighting racist anti-immigrant ballot measures statewide. We know that coalitions and alliances are the path to victory – and in the case of OneOregon, the strongest line of defense against an emboldened white nationalist movement.
In 2018, we’re focused on building safe and healthy communities with an emphasis on developing grassroots leadership through Bus Riders Unite and the Youth Environmental Justice Alliance. Meet other people who organize with OPAL, and get a sense for where we’re headed. Plus OPAL staff, members, and core community supporters will be there to talk more about what we’re doing this year.
